History Group

Following on from last month we again entered the world of Scotland in the 13th Century and continued our search for understanding the conflicts between the English King Edward 1st and the Scots. It was indeed a bloody period in history and one which lives still under the title of War for Independence. Names like Wallace and the Bruce came to the fore and even after the death of Edward I the name of Bannockburn lives to echo even today.

Our next meeting will move us forward to consider the sharp contrast between Edward I and his son Edward II.

Lincolnshire Church Architecture group

This month's meeting was held at Fydell House where we had the chance to refresh our understanding of the Decorated and Perpendicular styles  of architecture. With the help of photos taken at our visit to Wigtoft and Heckington Church we put ourselves to the test of identifying architectural clues which could help date the various additions to these churches. This was followed by a talk on the Palladian style which came into fashion in the 18th Century. Our next visit will be on December 1st when we will go to view the chures at Well and Langton by Spilsby.

Discussion Group

By six votes to three, the Discussion Group decided that healthy eating had real benefits and was not just a fad.      It was pointed out that eating healthy, natural food brought benefits in so many ways.    Food with too much sugar, fat and salt was attractive to many people but very often led to overweight and other, often serious health problems.
"Better eating would mean a country that was healthier and the NHS would be saving a great deal of money" a member said. The opponents pointed out that often people who had a fat-rich diet flourished.   Pleasure in eating had to be considered as well.       So-called healthy eating was more like a fad because the idea of healthy eating often changed according to time and place.   But there was general agreement that whatever one ate, it was better to have it in moderate quantities and to combine it with exercise.

The Photography Group

The September meeting was supposed to be a tour around the town looking for unusual shots of Boston, this however was put off by the rain. An indoor meeting was organised to discuss how to slow the cameras down to take photographs of moving water etc. October meeting we will again try outside weather permitting, at the moment the cemetery is looking very grand with the autumn colours, hopefully the leaves will stay a little longer and the weather will be better so we can get out and about.

Busy at work - some of the photography group experimenting with the best way to take close up shots.
